Power BI offers two ways to access data, Import and Direct Query. Import lets you save a dataset at a point in time and build reports on it. This is good for End of Month reports or the like where you need the data saved on a particular date and the need to work on the reports. Direct Query runs live queries every time you generate a new Report. This gives you real time data for dashboards and similar reports but puts a larger load on your SQL Server.
